The Quick Guide To Creating A Home Gym Shed.

What Are The Benefits Of Having A Gym Shed?

Who doesn’t need more exercise? Physical exercise causes numerous brain chemicals to be released, like endorphins, which can make you feel happier, more relaxed, and less stressed. Having a home gym or gym shed is one method to motivate yourself to perform more physical activity. Then maybe you won’t have an excuse not to exercise!

Exercising frequently is one of the best ways to ensure that you will receive all the great benefits that exercise has to offer, like better stamina, clearer thinking, and of course… increased confidence in the way you look. Having your own gym is really exciting because you can make your own rules, and arrange the gym however you want. Don’t forget that your gym shed is open to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But why put your home gym in a shed and not in the house? Let’s face it, most of us don’t simply have the extra space, and building additions onto houses are costly and time-consuming. Using a shed is a quick and easy way to keep space in your house free from gym equipment!

In this article, we’ll talk about what the ideal size and style for a gym shed are, how a gym shed can actually save you money, as well as what sort of shed is ideal for a home gym. Stay with us to the end.

3 Reasons To Get A Gym Shed

1. Never Miss Workout

Do you have a busy life and find it difficult to obtain regular exercise? Exercise is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your physical, mental, and emotional health. If you like regular exercising, your home gym shed will allow you to make the most of whatever free time you have.

2. No Waiting

Ever have to wait for your favorite piece of equipment at the gym? In your gym shed, you can use whatever you want whenever you want it. Wait no longer for other people to get out of the way so that you can finish your exercise routine. With your gym shed, all of your equipment is neatly stored and ready for you in the backyard!

3. Save Money?

Maybe yes, maybe no… it depends on how you look at it.

First, if having a consistent place to exercise at home is all the encouragement you need to be serious about exercise, then having a gym shed will undoubtedly make you healthier. Healthier living is has a whole host of benefits, even financial, an that can be a bit hard to quantify.

What we can attempt to quantify, however, is the cost of a gym membership versus a gym shed. This will depend on where you live, how often you go to the gym, and how many people in your family need to use the gym.  But let’s break it down with an example.

If you are spending 15 minutes one-way going to the nearest gym, and you are exercising the minimum amount of 3 times a week, you will be spending a whopping 1.5 hours on the road per week just traveling to the gym and back! If you would value your time at $20 per hour, that means you will be spending $30 a week on your own time for transportation for a monthly cost of $120. So assuming you are paying the average cost of a gym membership of $45, your actual cost would be $165 a month! Do you have other family members who use the gym?  This needs to be factored into the equation as well.

While getting a gym membership, and outfitting your home gym in a shed is a relatively large upfront cost, it is a one-time investment.  Going with the “average” cost of a gym membership of $165, we can now look at what the cost of a gym shed is to make a comparison.

What Is The Cost To Build Your Workout Shed?

We have three expenses that need to be factored: the shed, finishing the shed and the equipment. The cost of a gym-sized shed is determined by the material used and the size. If you currently have a large, tall, and sturdy shed, that you are not using, you could convert it into a gym, but let’s assume that you are starting from scratch.

What Is A Good Size Shed For A Home Gym?

To determine the size of the shed, you will need to decide what you want to include in your home gym.  Most home gyms will require between 50 and 200 square feet of space.

  • Treadmill—30 square feet

  • Elliptical trainer—30 square feet

  • Single-station gym—35 square feet

  • Free weights—20–50 square feet

  • Stationary bike—10 square feet

  • Rowing machine—20 square feet

  • Stair climber—10–20 square feet

  • Ski machines—25 square feet

  • Multistation gym—50–200 square feet.

Getting back to the cost.  Let’s assume you need 120 square feet for your gym.  At the time of this writing, the base cost of a 10×12 Utility Shed from Maco Structures and Trailers was $4345.  Sheds should be depreciated for 15 years (A maintained Maco Structures shed will last longer!). This means that the cost of your shed per month over 15 years is $25.33 per month.

Cost Of Finishing Your Shed

If you are in Georgia, insulating your gym shed may be important, as we do deal with quite a lot of seasonal variations in temperature.  When it comes to finishing a shed you can go spartan or fancy, it just depends on your taste and budget.

For the sake of example though, let’s say that you will give yourself a budget of $3000 to finish your shed. The 15-year monthly cost on your finishing job would be $20.83 per month

Cost Of Home Gym Equipment

Homeadvisor says basic home gym equipment will cost between $50 and $5000!  Now that’s quite a range, but literally, everything depends upon what brands of equipment and how much new and/or used equipment you are planning to buy.  Let’s say that you end up spending $2000 on equipment, Over 15 years your equipment will cost you about $11.11 per month.

Putting It All Together

Using the sample information that we have compiled here, let’s look at what your home gym in a shed will cost you over the 15 year period.

Shed Cost (120 Square Feet) $4860

Insulation/Finishing the Shed $3000

Buying the Equipment $2000

Total $9860.  Now let’s do the math on the total to figure out the monthly cost of your home gym in a shed. $9,860/15 years/12 months in year = $54.78 per month.

Earlier we looked at the cost of the gym membership + the time to get there and valued it at $165 per month. This means your gym shed would save you a whopping $109.22 per month. Obviously, in our example, we made A LOT of assumptions, nevertheless, it is at least possible to see how spending the money to build a gym shed can be a wise one.

Which Type Of Shed Is Best For A Home Gym?

If you don’t have a shed and want to buy one to establish your own personal gym, here are some ideas. A wooden shed is a perfect choice for establishing a gym. Wooden sheds are the most adaptable and flexible and are the easiest to finish and customize.
