8 Essential Playground Safety Tips
Swings, slides, playhouses, and so much more — playing on a playground is one of the best parts of childhood. Whether you have your own playset in your backyard or visit a public park, kids need to play safely while having a great time!
At Maco Structures, we’re all about playsets, swing sets, and kids' safety — it’s at the heart of our business. Check out our simple yet crucial playground safety tips to ensure your kids stay safe and enjoy their time outside.
Playground Safety Tips for Parents
You want your kids to enjoy playing outside as much as you did — but you want them to be safe, too. By keeping a few simple playground safety tips in mind, you can ensure that outdoor playtime (whether at the park or in your own backyard) is all fun and no harm.
1. Wear the Right Shoes
Nothing beats the thrill of running around as fast as you can. Just make sure your kids are wearing the right shoes when they head to the playground. Sneakers or sandals with a wrap-around band in the back are ideal. Flip-flops can cause tripping and falling, so they’re best kept off the playground.
2. One at a Time on the Slide
It seems simple, but one of our most important playground safety tips is to make sure your kids know to go down the slide one at a time. Although our slides are built to be extremely sturdy, if children try to sit in each other’s laps, someone may tip over the side.
3. Don’t Climb up the Slide
Kids love to climb up slides, but it’s not a safe habit. On crowded playgrounds, trying to climb up the slides can result in getting hit by another kid sliding down. Fortunately, we offer tons of fun climbing options on our play sets, including rock walls and rope ladders.
4. Don’t Jump off the Swings
This one’s tough. We all did it as kids, but we all knew someone who got hurt doing it. Simply put, swinging is fun enough without jumping off. Remind your kids: safety first.
5. Supervise Monkey Bars
Monkey bars are great for acrobatics, but since there’s a risk of falling, you need to watch closely. Set a rule where your kids need to get you before they climb the monkey bars. Plus, they’ll love seeing how proud you are when they nail it!
6. Don’t Walk Too Close to Swinging Kids
Make sure your kids know not to walk too close in front of or behind other kids on swings. Some kids swing fast and could knock down or injure others unintentionally.
7. Make Sure the Equipment Is in Good Condition
This playground safety tip applies to public parks. Equipment in poor condition isn’t just less fun — it can be unsafe. Check for damaged swing seats, sharp edges on metal frames, and anything else that could be hazardous.
8. Make Sure the Area Is Clean and Safe
Another tip for public places: if your kids are playing at a park, check the area for trash, broken glass, and other unsafe objects. Not everyone respects public spaces, so you need to be vigilant to keep your kids safe.
